Journal  /  Stage II · Understand

I spent years
intellectualizing
my problems.

I knew every trauma. Every trigger. I could even tell you why I did the things I did. None of that changed anything.

I want to say that plainly, because I think a lot of people are sitting exactly there and quietly concluding that something is wrong with them. You have done the reading. You have done the therapy, maybe more than once. You can explain your patterns better than the people around you can explain theirs. And you are still doing the thing.

That is not a failure of effort. It is a real limit of understanding.

Insight is not the same as change

I kept repeating the patterns until I began focusing less on learning, or talking about my problems, and more on feeling and experiencing. That shift was not subtle. It was the difference between describing a room and walking into it.

Real change happened when I learned to listen to my body, understand my nervous system, and build a kinder more honest relationship with myself. Not when I finally found the right explanation. There was never going to be a right explanation.

Who am I when I am no longer performing for belonging?

That question became the foundation for Rooted Resonance, and it is a different kind of question than the one I had been asking. I had been asking how to become who I was supposed to be. Getting good at that question is exactly what got me stuck.

Why the patterns held on

I have spent my life living out the patterns of adapting, people pleasing, and mastering the art of self abandonment. Not because I wanted to, but because that is what I thought I needed to do to survive.

That last part matters. The strategies were not flaws. They worked. They kept things calm, they kept people close, they got me through rooms I did not know how to be myself in. A nervous system that learns something works does not have a good way of noticing when the conditions have changed.

So when you try to think your way out of one, you are arguing with a part of you that is not listening to arguments. It learned this before you had words for any of it, and it keeps the record somewhere the explanation cannot reach.

What I see in the people I work with

I find myself working with people who have spent years adapting to keep relationships, avoid conflict, earn love, meet expectations, or all of the above. Most arrive feeling lost, worried about the future and unsure of their place in it. They are exhausted, burnt out from trying to fit in, and they don't know how to change it.

Often they arrive apologizing for still being stuck, which tells you something about how long they have been treating themselves as a problem to be solved.

I believe this is not about fixing yourself. It is about remembering who you have always been.

That remembering happens through the body more than through the mind. It is slower than anyone wants. And in my experience it arrives in a way that feels gradual for a long time and then, fairly suddenly, obvious.

If you are in this stage

Understanding is Stage II of the Rooted Resonance framework. If you have been circling the same insight for a while, that circling is information, not failure. Somatic therapy is usually what helps here.
